The 2018-2019 Choice Program Application Process

Application Procedures

Students who are applying to Cumberland County Schools’ (CCS) Choice Program for the first time must complete an application form and return it to the applicable location (see below) prior to the deadline. Applications are valid for one year only. All Cumberland County students have an opportunity to participate in the CCS’ Choice Program based on availability, facilities, and consideration of special needs.

Students currently assigned to a Choice program will remain assigned to their current school unless a “Choice exit intent” form is completed and submitted to the Student Assignment Office. Forms will be mailed to parents; completed “Choice exit intent” forms must be received at the Student Assignment Office no later than January 31, 2018, if you no longer wish for your child to remain assigned to their current choice school assignment.

You can submit your 2018-2019 Choice application on-line using the links below or at the CCS’ Student Assignment Office or at the school site. High school academies have additional application requirements. The Student Assignment Office will forward your application to the academy to which you have applied. Additionally, you must obtain a school application and submit the application and any additional required information to the academy director at the school(s) to which you applied. A separate choice application must be completed for each high school program to which you apply.

Application Deadline:

Choice applications will be accepted January 2, 2018 through February 20, 2018; kindergarten applications will be accepted through April 4, 2018. Students will be placed in schools if space is available. Please note: To attend a Cumberland County school, the student must reside in Cumberland County with a parent or court-appointed custodian.

Please Note: Admission to a CCS’ Choice Program does not guarantee athletic eligibility.

Transferring Schools During the School Year: Once a parent/legal custodian makes the commitment to enroll a student in a particular CCS’ Choice Program, the parent/legal custodian will not be able to transfer the student to another school during the school year. Exceptions to this policy must be approved by the Superintendent/Designee and must be requested in writing.

Who to call for More Information: Please feel free to discuss CCS’ Choice Program options with your child’s principal. For additional information about a specific CCS’ Choice Program, call the appropriate school. If you have questions about the curriculum, you may contact the CCS’ Curriculum and Instruction Department at 910.678.2407. If you have questions regarding the status of your application or student placement, contact the CCS’ Student Assignment Office at 910.678.2616.

No student or employee in the CCS shall, on the basis of age, gender, race, religion, national origin, marital status, or handicapping condition, be denied the benefits of, or be subject to discrimination under, any educational program or activity. All Cumberland County schools maintain high academic standards and use the North Carolina Standard Course of Study as the basis of their curriculum.

Voluntary Transfer Application Procedures

A written request for a voluntary transfer of a student to another school may be submitted by the parent or court-appointed custodian on an Application for Voluntary Transfer. All reassignments due to voluntary transfer requests are valid for no more than one school year and no subsequent transfer within the same year will be permitted except for a change of his/her parent’s residence from one attendance area to another. Transportation for students is the responsibility of the parent. Students granted transfers must remain in good standing at the school throughout the year. The student must attend school and class, be on time and picked up from school in a timely manner. The application period to apply for a Voluntary Transfer for the 2018-2019 school year is April 18-May 31, 2018.
